Summary

Gemma Doyle and Jayne Wilson are back on the case when a body is discovered in a haunted museum in bestselling author Vicki Delany's eighth Sherlock Holmes Bookshop mystery。

Scarlet House, now a historical re-enactment museum, is the oldest building in West London, Massachusetts。 When things start moving around on their own, board members suggest that Gemma Doyle, owner of the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium, might be able to get to the bottom of it。 Gemma doesn’t believe in ghosts, but she agrees to ‘eliminate the impossible’。 But when Gemma and Jayne stumble across a dead body on the property, they’re forced to consider an all too physical threat。

Gemma and Jayne suspect foul play as they start to uncover more secrets about the museum。 With the museum being a revolving door for potential killers, they have plenty of options for who might be the actual culprit。

Despite Gemma's determination not to get further involved, it would appear that once again, and much to the displeasure of Detective Ryan Ashburton, the game is afoot。

Will Gemma and Jayne be able to solve the mystery behind the haunted museum, or will they be the next to haunt it?

Gemma Doyle is asked by her best friend and business partner’s mother, Leslie, to go to Scarlett House and investigate。 The historical home has never had a history of being haunted, but lately strange things have been happening。 Items moved around the place, and the barn animals going crazy for no apparent reason。 While at the house, Gemma and Jayne hear a woman scream and noise from the kitchen, but discovery nothing。 Nothing out of place, and no woman。 Later, they find a dead body by the barn。 Gemma Doyle is asked by her best friend and business partner’s mother, Leslie, to go to Scarlett House and investigate。 The historical home has never had a history of being haunted, but lately strange things have been happening。 Items moved around the place, and the barn animals going crazy for no apparent reason。 While at the house, Gemma and Jayne hear a woman scream and noise from the kitchen, but discovery nothing。 Nothing out of place, and no woman。 Later, they find a dead body by the barn。 Gemma suspects foul play but has no evidence。On top of this, Gemma’s sister Pippa has come to visit。 Gemma has many questions。I have read many of Vicki Delany’s novels。 She is one of my absolute favorite authors。At this point of Gemma Doyle’s life, I would hope that she would be used to being asked to investigate。 I would also expect her to know how many of the individuals in West London appreciate her。 I was relieved that Ryan and Louisa were not as precedent as normal。 There is only so much animosity from a disgruntled cop that I can take。 I thought the mystery was average。 Maybe it's because I read mystery novels, but I had figured out the how’s at the beginning。 I was suspicious of the why halfway through。 It was the who that I was still unsure of by the end。 There were a couple of suspects who would have made sense。Overall, I rate this novel 4 out of 5 stars。 。。。more

Given the unsettling circumstances, Gemma doesn't think so。 And she's even more intrigued when her equally quirky and smart sister Pippa arrives for an unprecedented and unplanned visit。 Pippa is known to perform certain hush hush assignments for the British government but she's not talking。Fun, light-hearted series。 Thanks to the publisher and to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

I am really enjoying this series now that I am getting to know the characters。 I must find time to go back and read the ones I have missed。In The Game Is a Footnote Gemma investigates a haunting, finds a dead body, annoys her boyfriend, receives an unexpected visit from her sister and solves the case。 I loved the sister, Pippa, who obviously equates with Sherlock's brother, Mycroft。 In fact I love all the ways the author relates her text to the stories of Sherlock Holmes。 The story is excellent, I am really enjoying this series now that I am getting to know the characters。 I must find time to go back and read the ones I have missed。In The Game Is a Footnote Gemma investigates a haunting, finds a dead body, annoys her boyfriend, receives an unexpected visit from her sister and solves the case。 I loved the sister, Pippa, who obviously equates with Sherlock's brother, Mycroft。 In fact I love all the ways the author relates her text to the stories of Sherlock Holmes。 The story is excellent, the mystery is involved, there are many bookish references and numerous animals, not all of them friendly。 In fact I enjoyed it all so much I am going to give it five stars! Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book。 。。。more

Why were the animals in the barn so spooked, why killed David the man taking care of them?。 How does one lock oneself in a barn? Why was Pippa, Gemma sister, in town?。。。。some many questions。。。and there is Ryan the love interest in the mix。。。。。and we are deep set in mystery。。We also have a parallel story with Bunny Leigh, a wash out popstar, wintering in a rented house。 She comes to Gemma bookstore to snoop around but she really wants is to get close to her estrange daughter Ashleigh who is Gemma sales clerk。。。what are her intentions。。。。the story tells us。 Piece by piece we discover through a multitude of red herrings what is what。The development is very slow moving。 We have an excess of details describing the inside of house, the period costume one wears, what one set at tea time, who comes to visit, etc。 This story turns in circles and I fast lost interest, some parts didn’t work for me and other were confusing at times。。。 maybe my mind was too often someplace else。。。Gemma although in most part is fairly smart, at time she seemed to be comes out of a cracker box。。。。There are a few too many players in here to muddy the soup and had a hard time remembering who they were by the end。。。maybe again my mind was not totally there by that time。 The book started off interestingly but petered out by the end。 This one may not have been my favourite but that is my opinion others do not share this by a long shot 。。。so it is up to you to judge。My thanks to Crooked Lane Books and Netgalley for the ARC 。。。more

This is book eight in the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery series and as I was reading, I kept asking myself, “How did I not know about these books?” I obviously need to broaden my cozy mystery horizons。 While I don’t know the origin of how Gemma Doyle came from London to West London, Massachusetts, I can fill in some of the basics for others not in the know。 (While I’ll admit to never having read the series penned by Arthur Conan Doyle, I have seen a few movies and series so I’m somewhat well v This is book eight in the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery series and as I was reading, I kept asking myself, “How did I not know about these books?” I obviously need to broaden my cozy mystery horizons。 While I don’t know the origin of how Gemma Doyle came from London to West London, Massachusetts, I can fill in some of the basics for others not in the know。 (While I’ll admit to never having read the series penned by Arthur Conan Doyle, I have seen a few movies and series so I’m somewhat well versed。) Gemma co-owns the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium (guess what they sell?) with her great-uncle as well as the tea shop next door, with her best friend Jayne (whom, I presume, is Watson to Gemma’s Sherlock。) Gemma does indeed have a keen eye for detail, as well as a solid hold on her emotions (something I appreciate in a female character)。 In addition, her sister, Pippa, holds an ultra-secret position high in the British Government, so there we have a female Mycroft。In this book, Gemma is asked by the local historical society to spend the night at The Scarlet House due to rumors of a haunting。 Gemma reluctantly agrees and while strange things do appear to be afoot, she’s sure it’s more likely a prankster than a ghost。 Then Gemma and Jayne stumble across the body of one of the volunteers and even though Gemma is still convinced the culprit isn’t a ghost, someone is definitely trying to frighten people out of the historic site。Is someone attempting to get a good deal on the property, knowing the historic society is in dire financial straits, and their attempts to frighten went too far? Could the mystery be linked to the reclusive aging pop star who is wintering in West London? Gemma needs to figure out what’s going on before any more of the living join the hypothetical ghost。Even though this book is well into the series, I wasn’t lost。 The plot was easy to follow and there are enough details hinted at from previous books that my curiosity was piqued。 I may go back and read some of the earlier novels, see what I’ve been missing。I loved the setting (small sea-side town on Cape Cod) and none of the characters were too over the top。 Gemma’s style reminded me a bit of an Anne Perry character - nothing frivolous but still sympathetic。 I did feel like a lot of the mystery was solved off stage, and characters popped up conveniently to proffer a needed piece of the puzzle。 Still, it was a brilliant manipulation of several characters without feeling overwhelming and no loose strings at the end。I recommend this one to the cozy mystery aficionados out there, especially if you have a fondness for all things Sherlock Holmes。Thank you to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for providing the ARC。 I’ve left my review honestly and voluntarily。 。。。more

This was a light, easy read, cozy mystery。 While I enjoy all the books in the series, this one was a little slower at the start than the others, but quickly picked up pace within the first few chapters。I always have mixed emotions about the main character, Gemma。 Do I love her wit and sarcasm, or is it annoying? In this latest book I actually enjoyed her and felt she had toned things down a little。 Enjoyable series, and this last book can be read as a standalone or enjoyed in order。 I received a This was a light, easy read, cozy mystery。 While I enjoy all the books in the series, this one was a little slower at the start than the others, but quickly picked up pace within the first few chapters。I always have mixed emotions about the main character, Gemma。 Do I love her wit and sarcasm, or is it annoying? I enjoyed how the history of Scarlet House and its inhabitants were interwoven with current events。 This book kept my interest and I couldn’t put it down until I found out who was behind all of the mysterious events and their motivation。This book was my introduction to the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop series。 I was left wanting more and will be reading the previous books to learn more about Gemma, the Bookshop and Emporium, and the residents of West London, Massachusetts。 A thoroughly enjoyable read that I would recommend to cozy mystery and Sherlock Holmes fans。 Thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for providing me with an advance copy in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more
